2. Measure interruption density

Organizations often count meetings but ignore all the smaller interruptions between them.

Look at the combination of:

  • Scheduled meeting hours
  • Chat and email volume
  • Number of active communication channels
  • Unplanned calls and escalations
  • Notification defaults
  • After-hours messages
  • Frequency of priority changes
  • Time available for uninterrupted work

You do not need to monitor individual employees to understand the design. Use team-level calendars, system settings, workflow data, anonymous pulses, and observation. Ask employees which interruptions are necessary, which are avoidable, and which could be grouped.

  • Which work is safety critical?

  • Can frontline employees participate without corporate email?
  • Are rules written in plain language?
  • Does verified activity flow automatically when possible?
  • Are reminders useful, or just another notification?
